TAKING INFORMED ACTION
How does Nebraska’s current legislation address the issue of statewide water quality?
OUTLINE
*For more detailed instructions, see the full lesson plan.
Consider having your students research and create files for even more bills/laws in your state that are related to water quality. These files should be added to the archive for future reference. The students’ search for more bills/laws may be influenced by the questions they still have at the end of the lesson.
Consider having your students participate in a dialogue about what they wrote in their essays. This discussion should focus especially on the potential gaps or shortcomings still present in your state’s water quality legislation (as their solution plans could be designed to address one of them).
Consider having the students create another archive for a nearby state that is facing similar water problems, and then compare the water quality legislation of the two states.
ASSESSMENT
The way you assess this assignment will depend on what you choose to do with your students. In general, however, you can grade the students based on some or all of the following criteria:
- Can the student read, comprehend, and summarize the main points of a bill/law?
- Can the student share thoughts coherently and respectfully within the context of a class discussion?
- Can the student listen respectfully and attentively during class discussion?
- Can the student recognize and summarize the similarities and differences between water quality legislation in two different states?
