TAKING INFORMED ACTION

How should citizens utilize their state's legislative process to accomplish their goals?

OUTLINE

*For more detailed instructions, see the full lesson plan.

To begin, the students will consider the following prompt:

You are a student, and you want to promote the protection and improvement of Nebraska’s water quality through committee hearings.

  • In what ways could you use committee hearings to accomplish your goals? What are your options?
  • Which of these options would you choose, and why?

If the students wrote an essay or participated in a dialogue for their summative assessment, they will have already responded to this prompt. If this is the case, have the students review their responses. If not, ask them to respond to it in writing.

Based on how they responded to the prompt, the students will create an infographic demonstrating the specifics of how they could put their plan into action. Give the students the following prompts to guide the development of their infographics:

  • What steps would you need to take to make your plan a reality
  • What information would you need to find?
  • Who might you need to contact, and for what purposes?
  • If you would choose to have us testify at a committee hearing ourselves, from what perspective would we be testifying? How could we use this perspective to our advantage?
  • If you would choose to have someone testify on our behalf, who would you contact? After indicating a general perspective (i.e. a university botany professor), do some research to find specific individuals who fit your description (i.e. Dr. Jones).
  • If you would choose to have someone testify on our behalf, how would we support that person?

ASSESSMENT

Grade the students’ infographics based on the following criteria:

  • Is the student’s infographic neat, clear, and well-organized?
  • Did the student correctly identify steps they would need to take in order to set their plan into action?
  • Did the student identify individuals they might need to contact to set their plan into action?
  • Did the student identify and describe the perspective of the testifier(s) featured in their plan?
  • Overall, does the student’s infographic describe a detailed and well-thought-out plan of action related to civic action via a committee hearing?
