SUMMATIVE PERFORMANCE TASK

How should the diverse perspectives of community members influence the development of civic solutions?

OUTLINE

*For more detailed instructions, see the full lesson plan.

The summative for this lesson can be delivered in two different formats: essay and/or dialogue. You will notice that the questions are similar, but not identical. This is because some types of questions are more suitable for an essay than for a dialogue (such as questions that are specific to each student’s solution plan) and vice versa. Feel free to mix and match between the two formats.

Note also that the summative options for this lesson are all directly related to the Solution Plan Project. If your students are not completing this project, you may need to alter the discussion/essay prompts.

The students will discuss how their solution plans will affect different stakeholder groups.

Discussion prompts:

  • Of all the stakeholder perspectives we collected, which do you think is the most overlooked? Are there any problems or obstacles that we weren’t aware of before we interviewed these stakeholders?
  • Which of the water quality solutions we have discussed in the past do you think best accommodates the needs and interests of multiple stakeholder groups?
  • Are there any perspectives that you feel we did not fully explore through our interviews?
  • After learning more about the different perspectives of water quality stakeholder groups, in what ways do you think we should measure the success of our civic solution plans? What might the various impacts of our plans look like?
  • Of all the information that we collected in our stakeholder interviews, which do you think is the most valuable to our class? Why?

For more information about conducting and grading discussions, see this guide.

The students will write an essay about how their solution plan will affect different stakeholder groups.

Essay prompts:

  • Of all the information that you and your classmates collected during your stakeholder interviews, what do you think is the most valuable to us, and why?
  • How might the perspectives of different water quality stakeholders shape your solution plan?
    • List some of the intended consequences of your solution plan. Then, list some potential unintended consequences of your solution plan. Remember, consequences can be both positive and negative.
    • Choose at least three stakeholder groups and explain how you think each one would feel about your solution plan in its current state
      • How well does your plan currently account for different stakeholder perspectives?
      • Which stakeholder groups are most likely to support your solution plan? Which are most likely to be skeptical of it?
    • Based on what you learned from our stakeholder interviews, what new obstacles or problems might you need to consider in designing your solution plan?
    • How could you reshape your solution plan to better accommodate and/or involve different stakeholder perspectives? Be specific.
  • Based on what you learned from your stakeholder interviews, in what different ways might you measure the success or failure of your civic solution plan?
  • Are there any stakeholder perspectives that you feel we did not fully explore through our interviews? Explain your thoughts.

For more information about assigning and grading essays, see this guide.

  • Did the student recognize the value of their stakeholder interviews?
  • Did the student identify unforeseen obstacles or unintended consequences that they should account for when designing their solution plan?
