STUDENT MATERIALS
How do citizens solve problems democratically?
“Jigsaw – Stakeholder Interests”
In this activity, you will consider the needs and interests of different groups of stakeholders, as well as how these might influence how you choose to address our chosen problem. You will work with your small group to fill out a “stakeholder interests” handout for your assigned stakeholder group.
“Current Events Connection – Conflicting Stakeholder Interests”
In this activity, you will read a current events news article and reflect on how conflicting stakeholder interests can be balanced.
“Let’s Brainstorm! – Potential Partnerships”
In this activity, you will brainstorm about who you could potentially partner with to solve our civic problem using BeACitizen resources.
BeACitizen – Who are the STAKEHOLDERS?
“Research and Reflection – Potential Partners”
In this activity, you will research potential partners for your civic action project. You will fill out a partner profile template for each potential pattern you research. Then, you will read each other’s profiles and identify three “prime candidates” for the project. Finally, after participating in small group debates, you will vote for “prime candidate partners.”
“Sweet Combos – Combining Multiple Civic Actions”
In this activity, you will consider how multiple civic actions can be combined to create better solutions. You will review your options for civic action using BeACitizen resources. You will also practice generating effective civic action combos by filling out a handout.
“Drafting a Civic Action Plan”
In this activity, you will decide which civic action(s) you think would best address our chosen problem. You will fill out a handout that will help you make decisions about what kinds of actions you would want to take, which civic spaces you would want to utilize, what your target audience would be, etc. You will also read each other’s handouts and fill out peer review forms for them.
